On display, European masters of the 20th century and many works by Lorenzo Viani
Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, 22, 55049 Viareggio LU, Italia
A space entirely dedicated to contemporary art in the heart of Viareggio. This is the GAMC – Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art – one of the most interesting exhibition centers worldwide thanks to a rich permanent collection comprising over 3,000 works of art coming mostly from private donations and acquisitions by the Municipality.

Housed in the 19th-century Palazzo delle Muse and boasting 1,600 square metres of exhibition space, the Gallery is a lively showcase of the best artistic styles of the 20th century, from painting to sculpture to the graphic arts, with over 700 artists represented.

With the 2,000 works belonging to the Pieraccini Collection, the museum is home to a varied anthology that ranges from the Impressionists, including Monet and Gauguin, to the historic Avant-garde movements, with works by Picasso, Juan Mirò, Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, to the styles of today. Italian art in the 1900s is represented in its many facets by Felice Casorati, Fattori, De Chirico and Ottone Rosai, among others.

The GAMC also conserves the most important public collection of works by Lorenzo Viani (1882-1936), the Viareggio-born painter and noted exponent of European Expressionism.

The Gallery has 85 works by Viani, including his masterpiece, the large canvas depicting the Benedizione dei morti del mare, as well as the Holy Face and Testa di pazza, the only known sculpture by the artist, and 17 woodcut moulds that attest to Viani’s activity as an engraver.
