Opera del Duomo Museum in Pisa
A way to explore a world-famous treasure
Pisa
Piazza Arcivescovado, 10, 56126 Pisa PI, Italia

The Pisa Cathedral Works Museum is located in piazza dell’Arcivescovado, next to the famous Leaning Tower. The building that houses the museum is a 15th-century convent of the Capuchin sisters.

The exhibition halls are home to the cathedral’s vast art treasury with a focus on sculptures. The museum concentrates on countless medieval statues that adorned the Cathedral and Baptistery, thanks to the mastery of Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. In addition, there are many architectural fragments associated with the Piazza dei Miracoli, such as bas reliefs and capitals from the cathedral facade. Ancient tombs and monuments in remembrance of leading figures also take pride of place with their impressive sculptures made by great artists like Tino di Camaino, Nino Pisano and Andrea Guardi.

One area of the museum is dedicated in its entirety to medieval liturgical furnishings, especially exsultet, priceless parchment rolls once read from the pulpit, as well as various wall hangings and reliquaries ornately decorated with precious metals and gemstones. This section also contains an ivory Madonna and a wooden crucifix by Giovanni Pisano.
