The second part of our tour will take you to San Gimignano, the "Manhattan of the Middle Ages". Once we approach this medieval town, you understand why people call it that way. Indeed, you'll see 14 stone towers rising from the hill. These towers were synonym of power in the past and the richest families used to create high towers to show their wealth. It was very expensive to build and maintain a tower.
Moreover, many pilgrims visited San Gimignano in the past because of its location. As a matter of fact, the old Via Francigena runs through this astonishing hamlet. It was the old pilgrim route going from Canterbury to Rome through Switzerland and France.
This town is a Unesco site for its well-preserved buildings and artistic value. San Gimignano is famous for the white wine produced here, Vernaccia. Also other local products worth a taste, like saffron and golden ham (cured-dry with local saffron).
