Dante's gaze: agriculture and botany in the Dante universe
Online exhibition organized by the Accademia dei Georgofili

"... our divine Poet deserves to be read, admired and meditated on also by botanists, as by all men of science, as an omniscient man of his time, and as a teacher of those who know" (Ottaviano Targioni Tozzetti, 1820)

On the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, the Accademia dei Georgofili presents an exhibition dedicated to the Florentine poet on its website.

The aim is to contribute to the study of his figure by making available to scholars, users and the curious, the digital version of some volumes kept in the Historical Library that deal with Georgophile contents found in the main works of Dante and analyzing them in their context.

The leitmotif of the online exhibition and the choice of works presented take into account Dante's value as an acute observer of nature and its phenomena, be it astronomical, meteorological, climatic or environmental; at the same time they implicitly point out that if “his power of observation and copying of knowledge greatly benefited him in the conception and design of the Poem [the Divine Comedy], the scientific matter has always remained subordinate to the artistic aim. In the artistic execution, the poet receives great power of inspirations, precisely from that material whose scientific character has been recognized. "

There will also be agricultural themes, although they are less frequent in Dante's work, they also fall within the category of scientific subjects covered by the exhibition.

Through the proposed path, the Academy wants to provide an unusual approach to the deep awareness and knowledge of Dante's natural world that's rich in symbols and images.
