Quaestio de aqua et terra
Organized by the Museum of Geology and Paleontology of the University Museum System of the University of Florence

In 1320, Dante publicly addressed a question of natural philosophy "around the place and the shape, or form, of the two elements, namely water and earth". In a geocentric cosmos, the four earth-water-air-fire elements of Aristotelian cosmology are at the center, but the two heaviest ones compete for the role of "center of the universe". Do they coincide with the center of the sphere of water or with that of the terrestrial sphere? And what geometric relationship is there between the two globes? The position taken by Dante on a controversial and much debated topic in the early Middle Ages has come down to us with a text published in 1508, entitled "Quaestio de Aqua et Terra". The event briefly traces the various solutions adopted by medieval and Renaissance natural philosophers to the "Questio" and reveals the solution of an abstruse enigma, now finally solved.
