Uffizi predella saved in Montegufoni castle
A special work at the Museum of Sacred Art in Montespertoli

A work of the Uffizi, rescued from the raids of the Nazi army and the destruction of the Second World War, will be exhibited from May 14, 2022 to January 8, 2023 at the Museum of Sacred Art of San Piero in Mercato in Montespertoli, as part of the project Terre degli Uffizi, realised by the Galleries together with the Fondazione CR Firenze, within their respective projects Uffizi Diffusi and Piccoli Grandi Musei.

The project brings a "special" predella to Montespertoli: during the Second World War the work was hidden together with Venus, the Primavera, Giotto's Maestà and many other works, in the fortress of Montegufoni, where art found refuge from destruction and looting.

It is a predella from a 15th-century Florentine workshop - a painted "step" that stood at the base of a Renaissance "square altarpiece" - depicting Stories of Saint Pier Martyr and, in the central panel, Christ in Pity. Today, returning close to the place of its rescue, the work bears witness to an important piece of 20th century history.

As part of the exhibition, the piece is harmoniously connected to the Museum of Sacred Art, with contemporary works already present in the museum and coming from the area.
